Marcus Rashford struck twice, as Manchester United opened their Premier League account with a resounding 4-0 victory over Chelsea at Old Trafford on Monday (NZT).

The win was United's biggest over Chelsea at Old Trafford since 1965 to condemn Frank Lampard to a miserable start as a Premier League manager.

Along with Rashford's brace, Anthony Martial and Daniel James also scored for United.

Defender Harry Maguire made his debut for United and they were soon ahead, when Kurt Zouma fouled Rashford and the England striker stepped up to convert the penalty for a 1-0 lead.

Chelsea matched United for the next 45 minutes, with Emerson and Tammy Abraham both hitting the woodwork.

But Martial made it 2-0 on 65 minutes and two minutes later, it was 3-0, when Rashford scored his second. Debutant James completed the scoring with a fourth nine minutes from time.

"Four mistakes for the goals, let's get that out straight away, because we have to be self-critical about that," Lampard admitted to Sky TV. "But other than that, for 60 minutes, we controlled the game.

"At halftime, we should be in the lead and early in the second half, I didn't mind it and then, all of a sudden, the second and third goals, two mistakes and it's much easier for them to play at 3-0 up.

"At 1-0, we were the better team, but I can't stand here and look happy with that, because it's 4-0 and three points."

Earlier, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave Arsenal a winning start to their campaign, as they clinched a 1-0 victory at Newcastle.

The Gabon striker notched the only goal 13 minutes into the second half to inflict a defeat on Steve Bruce in his first match as Newcastle manager.

"It was a very good three points, we played very solid and I also think we controlled a lot of the game over 90 minutes, but we can improve more," Gunners boss Unai Emery said.

"For our confidence, that victory is very important. We played with some young players and that gave them the chance to improve."

Leicester and Wolves drew 0-0 in the other early match, with the video assistant ruling out a Leander Dendoncker goal for Wolves.

The midfielder's second-half strike was chalked off, after replays showed a handball by Willy Boly to ensure a 0-0 draw at the King Power Stadium.
