Mitre 10 Cup: Tasman trounce Wellington to prove title credentials

Tasman have sent a message to their competition that they are serious contenders for the Mitre 10 Cup premiership.

The Mako dominated Wellington 45-8 in Blenheim to kick off their campaign.

Stacked with quality right across the park including All Black loose forward Liam Squire, Tasman ran in seven tries to one in shocking conditions at Lansdowne Park.

Squire proved his class to remind New Zealand rugby fans of his barnstorming skillset, just a month after declaring himself unavailable for national selection.

Fellow World Cup contender Shannon Frizell was also impressive, starting in the unfamiliar position of lock, while Super Rugby standouts Alex Nankivell, Will Jordan and David Havili all made an impact, proving just how tough Tasman will be to roll this season.

Leicester Fainga'anuju scored a double while Andrew Makalio, Tyrel Lomax, Te Ahiwaru Cirikidevta, Squire and Havili all crossed the line in the romp.

Wellington's sole try came through Alex Fidow during their only period of parity early in the second half.
