Motorsport: Formula Three driver Marcus Armstrong sets sights on F1

Kiwi Formula Three driver Marcus Armstrong, who claimed his maiden victory in Hungary on Sunday, is edging closer to his dream of racing in Formula One.

The 19-year-old is currently part of the Ferrari drivers academy and hopes to become one of only a handful of New Zealanders to drive in F1.

"The goal is to win the championship and then progress through to F1," Armstrong told Newshub. "I feel that's a realistic goal, given where we are now."

Winning in Hungary was the bare minimum for Armstrong, who finds himself just outside the top three in the championship with three races left.

"It's extremely close and the competition is very high," he told Newshub. "I enjoy pushing myself and everyone else."

He feels he gets that competition at the Ferrari academy in Maranello, and while his F1 goal is firmly within reach, he knows how quickly things can change.

"In motorsport, it's far too competitive to just rock up and drive fast," he said. "You have to have the whole weekend perfect, and the preparation both physically and mentally as well."

Given how closely F1 teams watch the Formula Three championship, Armstrong knows it's not just the wins that will be noticed.

"If you make a mess of it, then everyone knows about it pretty quickly,"  he told Newshub. "But the same goes if you do a good job, so it's pretty cool."

Armstrong hopes for more of the latter to help him realise his Formula One dream.
