Tennis: Michael Venus achieves career-high doubles ranking after Citi Open win

Kiwi Michael Venus and South African partner Raven Klaasen have captured their second ATP 500 title of the year at the Citi Open in Washington DC.

The duo defeated Dutchman Jean-Julien Rojer and Romanian Horia Tecau 3-6, 6-3, 10-2 in a 74-minute contest.

They defeated French Open champions Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies, brothers Andy and Jamie Murray, and second seeds Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo en route to the championship match.

The victory is their third ATP title together and should see them move to career-high rankings when they are updated this week.

Venus will be ranked eighth and Klaasen just ahead of him at seven, which could see the pair ranked as high as number two in the world, behind Columbian duo Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah.

They also sit second in the race to the ATP Finals in London.

Venus and Klaasen earn 500 ATP doubles ranking points, and split prizemoney worth US$123,000 (NZ$188,171).

The pair won't be able to compete together next weekend in Montreal, due to visa problems for Klaasen entering Canada.

Instead, Venus will team up with Artem Sitak's former partner Austin Krajicek and they are unseeded.

Venus and Klaasen will resume their partnership the following week in Cincinnati for their final hit-out before the US Open, which starts later this month.
