Former UFC women's champion Ronda Rousey has come scarily close to losing a finger.

The 32-year-old was filming a scene for 9-1-1, a US television series when a "freak accident" occurred.

The now WWE star had a boat door slam on her hand, snapping a tendon in her middle finger and almost fracturing her ring finger.

She received treatment on set before being taken to a San Diego hospital, where she posted a photo on social media that shows her finger had almost split in two.

Thankfully, surgeons were able to successfully repair the finger and she was back filming the next day.

"Freak accident, first take of the day a boat door fell on my hand, I thought I just jammed my fingers so I finished the take before looking (I know it sounds crazy, but I'm used to live audiences and never showing pain unless I'm supposed to) after a break in the action I told our director the situation and was rushed via ambulance to the hospital where they promptly reattached my bone and tendon with a plate and screws.

"I returned to filming the next day and finished my scenes before returning home to recover. Modern medicine amazes me, I already had 50% range of motion back in 3 days.

"There's so much more than I can write here, stayed tuned via @rondarouseydotcom for the full story. And of course, tune in to see how well I can act like my finger didn't just fall off in this upcoming season of @911onfox."

Rousey was the first female global star of combat sports, becoming the first-ever UFC women's bantamweight champion in 2013.

The 2008 Olympic medalist in Judo retired from MMA in 2016 following successive losses to Holly Holm and Amanda Nunes.

She has since joined the world of sports entertainment, signing a multi-year deal with the WWE where she became the first woman to headline the company's showpiece event, WrestleMania, in New York earlier this year.
