Police have swooped on a drug plantation, after spotting the illegal rooftop garden during coverage of the Vuelta a Espana cycle race.

The 167km eighth stage of the classic tour of Spain finished through the streets of Igualada in Catalonia, won in a sprint finish by German Nikias Arndt.

But as overhead helicopters tracked the final stages, they inadvertently highlighted about 40 marijuana plants growing on top of inner city apartments.

Catalonian authorities began their investigations, after images of the plants went viral on social media. They raided the property on Tuesday (local time), but made no arrests.

The culprits had fled the building, leaving furniture on the street. Neighbours had previously reported the plantation, but their claims had apparently fallen on deaf ears.

Growing marijuana for personal use is legal in Spain, but the size of this garden suggests it was intended for much more.

After 11 stages, Kiwi George Bennett lies 13th overall, 10 minutes behind Jumbo Visma teammate and leader Primoz Roglic.
