EPL 2019/20: Kiwi Chris Wood scores brace for Burnley, Manchester City annihilate Watford

Burnley striker Chris Wood scored a superb first-half brace to help them outclass promoted Norwich City 2-0 at Turf Moor on Sunday (NZ time).

The result snapped Burnley's winless run of four games and gave Daniel Farke's Norwich a reality check following their 3-2 upset of champions Manchester City last weekend.

New Zealand international Wood put Burnley ahead in the 10th minute with his first league goal since April, guiding his header past Norwich goalkeeper Tim Krul after Ashley Westwood whipped in a perfect ball from a corner.

The Kiwi doubled Burnley's lead four minutes later by meeting midfielder Dwight McNeil's drilled pass from the left with a crisp left-footed shot that gave Krul no chance.

"I feel very happy with the display, not just with the win. It was a very dominant performance from the first whistle to the last," Burnley manager Sean Dyche told the BBC.

"We broke their play up early and scored two good goals. We didn't look in any trouble, and a small gripe would be that we should have scored more on the counter.

"There is a lot of competition for places up front. Ashley Barnes has been among the goals, Chris has probably been a bit unlucky, but I'm really pleased for him. His second today was an excellent goal after a great run and finish."

Elsewhere, Manchester City responded to last weekend's defeat with an emphatic 8-0 hammering of Watford.

With league leaders Liverpool not in action until Monday, City were looking to close the gap to two points.

City took less than a minute to prove the defeat against Norwich City was a minor setback as David Silva opened the floodgates with a well-worked opener. Further goals from Sergio Aguero, Riyad Mahrez, Bernardo Silva and Nicolas Otamendi gave City a 5-0 lead in under 18 minutes - the fastest a team has scored five times in Premier League history.

City had Manchester United's Premier League record victory margin - a 9-0 win over Ipswich Town in 1995 - in their sights but fell short by one goal.

Bernardo Silva completed his first top-flight hat-trick to make it 7-0 before Kevin De Bruyne's brilliant strike completed the rout.

"The same feeling I have now I had after Norwich, so it was not a bad performance," City manager Pep Guardiola said.

"We can lose the games, but the important thing is the approach and how we react."

The Video Assistant Referee disallowed two goals in a Premier League match for the first time as Tottenham slipped to a second defeat of the season after Leicester came from behind to secure the 2-1 win at the King Power Stadium.

Wilfred Ndidi thought he had given Leicester the lead when he bundled the ball into the net only for VAR to rule out the effort for offside.

However, there was no question over Harry Kane's 29th-minute strike as he fired past Kasper Schmeichel to give Spurs the lead.

Serge Aurier thought he had doubled the visitors' advantage but VAR, to the delight of the home fans, ruled that Son Heung-min was offside during the build-up. Replays showed the call was marginal.

Elsewhere, the pressure was mounting on manager Marco Silva after newly-promoted Sheffield United came away from Goodison Park with a 2-0 victory.

Meanwhile, Newcastle and Brighton played out a goalless draw at St James' Park.
