Mitre 10 Cup: North Harbour snatch victory from Waikato, Wellington edge past Bay of Plenty

North Harbour completed one of the greatest comebacks in Mitre 10 Cup history on Saturday, with a 38-36 win over Waikato in Albany.

Trailing 36-19 with 12 minutes remaining, Harbour scored three tries - including a sideline conversion from first-five Matt McGahan after the full-time siren - to secure an unlikely victory.

The conversion helped Harbour claim their second win of the season, which lifts them inside the top four of the Premiership standings after five games.

Harbour started the game with a hiss and a roar when Mark Telea scored after a minute, but that only inspired Waikato, who led 21-12 at the halftime break.

The Mooloos eventually built a 17-point buffer and looked certain to walk away with the win, before Harbour launched their mighty fightback.

Back-to-back tries to Luteru Tolai and James Little closed the gap to just five points before McGahan's heroics helped his team claim a remarkable win.

Waikato will look to bounce back when they host Hawke's Bay on Thursday, while Harbour heads to Nelson to face the unbeaten Tasman Mako.

Elsewhere, Wellington moved up to second in the Premiership standings after 16-15 win over Bay of Plenty in Rotorua.

Peter Umaga-Jensen scored the only try for the Lions to go along with 11 points from the boot of Jackson Garden-Bachop.

Richard Judd and Emoni Narawa both scored tries for the Steamers as Dan Hollinshead added a conversion and a penalty goal.

The result meant Bay of Plenty missed a chance to go to the top of the Championships standings.

Wellington faces Otago in their next match on Sunday, while Bay of Plenty heads to New Plymouth to Taranaki on Saturday.
