Tokyo Olympics 2020: Black Sticks women qualify for Japan after winning Oceania Cup

The Black Sticks women have booked their spot at next year's Olympic Games in Tokyo after winning the Oceania Cup in Rockhampton.

New Zealand drew with world number two Australia 1-1, which was enough to win the cup.

The Black Sticks fell behind early, when Mariah Williams gave Australia the lead, after just two minutes.

But with five minutes left, Olivia Merry scored from a penalty corner to level the match and ultimately seal their place at next year's showpiece event.

The draw meant the Black Sticks won the cup on goal difference, taking the series 6-5.

Australia levelled the three-match series the day before with a 3-2 win, but New Zealand's 3-1 victory in the opening match meant they carried a goal difference advantage into the deciding contest.

"The game was ugly at times, but the team dug in and was able to stick together to get a fantastic result," New Zealand coach Graham Shaw said.

The news wasn't so good for the Black Sticks men, who lost 3-0 in their final game against Australia, meaning the Kookaburras qualified for Tokyo.

Australia's women and New Zealand's men will now go into tomorrow's draw for the International Hockey Federation Olympic qualifiers.

The qualifiers are set for between October 26-November 3, with seven men's and seven women's teams booking their place at Tokyo 2020 from the 14 two-legged ties staged across the globe.
