Bathurst 2019: Scott McLaughlin cherishes victory by celebrating with Greg Murphy

Kiwi Supercars driver Scott McLaughlin says sharing his maiden Bathurst 1000 victory with hero Greg Murphy is a moment he'll never forget.

McLaughlin became the first New Zealand lead driver to win the 'Great Race' since Murphy in 2004.

Auckland-born driver Steve Richards won the race as a co-driver alongside Mark Winterbottom in 2013, and Craig Lowndes in 2015 and 2018.

When McLaughlin brought his winning Ford Mustang DJR Team Penske home, he made a point of celebrating with Murphy, who now works as a motorsport commentator.

"I'll never forget that moment," McLaughlin told The AM Show. "My hero, 'Murph', won it in 2004 and he was one of the first guys I saw when I got to victory lane - that was something I will never forget."

This year's edition came down to the last lap, as McLaughlin edged compatriot Shane van Gisbergen by 0.68s to claim his 18th victory of the season.

"It was a pressure cooker," the 26-year-old added. "You dream of winning this race by eight seconds and I had Shane breathing down my neck.

"I had one lap to win the biggest race of my life and proud to get a Kiwi one-two."

The AM Show host Duncan Garner made McLaughlin the "honorary member of the show" for Monday.

The win also marked the first Bathurst win by McLaughlin's DJR team since 1994.

With seven races left in the season, McLaughlin holds a 622-point lead over van Gisbergen in the Supercars championship.

The series resumes on October 26, with two races scheduled at the Gold Coast 600.
