Mitre 10 Cup: Fast-finishing Tasman thrash Northland in Nelson

Tasman have kept their 2019 unbeaten run intact, with a 52-6 thrashing of Northland, their ninth-straight win.

They had to work hard to put the stubborn defence of the Taniwha away, but a late deluge of tries ballooned the score to secure the bonus-point result.

The Mako took a while to hit their straps, before Te Ahiwaru Cirkidaveta opened the scoring for the hosts off the back of a lineout drive.

Fullback Will Jordan scored the second try for the Mako in the 27th minute, taking a pass from Alex Nankivell to cross in the corner for a 19-6 halftime lead.

But the premiership table-toppers showed their quality in the second 40  minutes, running in 33 unanswered points. Jamie Spowart scored in the 43rd minute for the home side to extend the lead to 26-6.

Over the final 15 minutes, Tasman put the game to bed, as Jordan, Wyatt Crockett, Tim O'Malley and Taina Fox-Matamua all crossed the chalk to put on 26 points.

Tasman take on Hawke's Bay in Napier next Saturday - a long-awaited clash between premiership and championship leaders - while Northland host Otago in Whangarei on Sunday.
