Mitre 10 Cup: Wellington book home semi-final with bonus-point win over Waikato

Wellington have thrashed Waikato 39-21 to secure a home semi-final, finishing second on the Mitre 10 Cup premiership ladder.

Waikato were the first side to cross the line, Samisoni Taukei'aho scored off the lineout drive.

But Wellington showed their class and their attacking flair out wide, scoring three tries in the final five minutes of the first half - Vince Aso, Billy Proctor and Asafo Aumua crossing for the hosts.

Aumua scored another after the break and Kemara Hauiti-Parapara added to the Lions' total to take the lead out to 39-7 and secure the win.

A late flourish from the youngsters in the Waikato team wasn't enough - Bailyn Sullivan and Louis Rogers scored tries to make the final score 39-21.

The loss ends the Mooloos' season with a dismal three wins, six losses and a draw - while Wellington will host Canterbury or North Harbour next week.
