Former NZ Warriors centre Solomone Kata is walking away from rugby league and will instead repotedly pursue a switch to rugby union.

The 24-year-old was released by the Warriors earlier this year, after losing his spot in the starting side and went onto sign with the Melbourne Storm.

But he failed to crack the top team, instead playing reserve grade with the Easts Tigers in the Intrust Super Cup.

Kata has since announced he will pursue other opportunities.

"I've really enjoyed my time here at Storm and made some good friends over the past few months," Kata said.

"However, another opportunity has come up that I'm keen to explore, so I won't be with the club next year.

"I'd like to thank everyone at Storm for making me feel so welcome and wish the boys all the best in 2020."

Sydney's Daily Telegraph reports the Tongan international has signed a two-year deal with the Brumbies.

The report adds Kata will put pen to paper within days and the Brumbies see him as a similar prospect to Ngani Laumape, who went from the Warriors to the All Blacks.

Kata had also been linked with a move to the Melbourne Rebels.

Kata made his NRL debut for the Warriors in round one of the 2015 season and went onto play 93 games for the Auckland-based side.

Storm general manager Frank Ponissi thanked Kata for his efforts.

"Although Sol wasn't able to break into our minor premiership-winning team, he proved to be a popular squad member, who was always willing to help his new teammates get the best preparation possible for their NRL match each week, as well as doing his job with the Tigers," he said.

"He leaves us with our best wishes for the future."
