Sevens: Black Ferns unbeaten on day one of USA tournament in Glendale

The Black Ferns Sevens have begun their 2019/20 world series campaign by winning all three pool games on day one of the USA Sevens in Glendale.

New Zealand, who have won the last two titles in the USA, registered wins over Japan, Russia and England to top Pool A on Sunday (NZ time). 

The Black Ferns will now meet Ireland in the quarter-finals at 6:17am Monday, with the final at 11:58am. 

New Zealand started the day with a commanding 40-7 win over Japan, with Sarah Hirini and Shakira Baker scoring two tries apiece, while Kelly Brazier and Michaela Blyde also scored. 

Russia were the Black Ferns' next victim, as New Zealand ran away 40-12 winners. 

Brazier led the way with a hat-trick of tries, with Stacey Waaka, Terina Te Tamaki and Montessa Tairakena scoring. 

Brazier and Hirini both continued their try-scoring form against England, with the latter scoring a brace in a 36-0 win. Niall Williams, Waaka and Blyde also scored in the shutout win.  

Russia were the other team from the pool to reach the quarter-finals, upsetting England 38-22 and Japan 29-0. 

The other quarter-finals are France v Spain, Australia v Russia and USA v Canada.
