Sevens: Blacks Ferns fall to hosts USA in semi-final of world series opener

The Black Ferns had to settle for bronze, after surrendering the Glendale Sevens title in dramatic circumstances to hosts the United States on Monday (NZ time).

New Zealand were eliminated from title contention in Colorado, when Kelly Brazier missed a game-tying conversion after the full-time siren to lose 19-17 in their semi-final against the Americans.

But the Black Ferns ended the tournament with a comfortable 31-14 victory over France.

The French raced out to a 14-0 lead, before New Zealand ran in five straight tries to Montessa Tairakena, Brazier, Gayle Broughton, Michaela Blyde and Stacey Waaka.

But hird was a disappointing result for New Zealand, considering they dominated the opening day with wins over Japan (40-7), Russia (40-12) an England (36-0).

They started the second day with an impressive 36-10 quarter-final demolition of Ireland.

Then, against the USA, New Zealand trailed by a converted try with time up on the clock.

Waaka crossed for her second try of the match to give them a chance to level the scores, but Brazier missed the conversion.

USA went onto win the title, beating Australia 26-7 in the final.

The second tournament of the series is scheduled for  Dubai from December 5-7.
