ANBL: NZ Breakers sweat on Corey Webster ankle injury

NZ Breakers guard Corey Webster has reportedly been cleared of a serious ankle injury, although he will undergo further tests in Auckland.

On Sunday, against the Adelaide 36ers, Webster had to be assisted off the court by teammates, after landing awkwardly on his left ankle attempting a lay-up early in the second quarter.

Webster's exit hurt the Breakers, as they slumped to their fifth straight defeat, losing 117-100 at Adelaide Arena.

When he left, Webster had scored 14 points - including four three-pointers - in less than 12 minutes.

But the Breakers have since provided an update, saying x-rays showed no fractures, although Webster may still have damaged ligaments that would see him sidelined.

After the match, Breakers director of basketball Dan Shamir said Webster's injury "doesn't look good" and admitted they feared the worst.

"He [Webster] is in hospital right now, getting that examined," Shamir said. "Obviously, it doesn't look good, but we'll wait for the results before we give information."

If the Breakers lose Webster, he would join their growing list of unavailable players that includes Robert Loe (fractured skull), Scotty Hopson (knee) and Glen Rice Jr (suspended indefinitely).

"I don't like to focus on injuries, but it's been a big factor for how our season is developing," Shamir added. "We've suffered a few already.

"I hope it [Webster injury] is not a big deal and we'll deal with whatever happens."

On Saturday, the Breakers hope to snap their losing streak, when they host the Illawarra Hawks - a team they've already beaten once this season - in a bottom-of-the-table clash.
