Blackcaps v England: Mitch Santner reflects on his superb diving catch

All-rounder Mitch Santer admits things "could be worse", after New Zealand's crushing win over England by an innings and 65 runs.

After excelling on day four, scoring 126 runs with the bat and nabbing three late wickets with the ball, Santner was in the action again on Monday, taking a superb one-handed diving catch to dismiss Ollie Pope.

The dismissal put the Blackcaps well in control as England eventually tumbled for 197.

A humble Santner told The Project he was happy to get his first 100 on the board.

"It was nice to [actually] have a bit of a bowl as well," said Santner, who finished with second-innings figures of 3/53.

"The spinner in New Zealand doesn't tend to do too much, so it was nice to see the pitch turning."

Asked by host Jeremy Corbett about his stunning catch, he said: "I picked it up a bit late to be fair."

"Wags [Neil Wagner] was pretty excited after that," Santner told The Project.

Monday's victory against took on extra significance, against an English side that broke New Zealand hearts with a countback win in the Cricket World Cup final earlier this year and again with a super-over victory in a T20 series decider.

"They've had the rub of the green on us in the last few games, especially [in] white ball [cricket].

"They're never easy to beat and it was nice to beat them - I'm happy there was no super over or anything like that to mix it up," said Santner.

Hamilton will host the second test, which starts Friday.
