Blackcaps v England: Tom Latham scores hundred as rain ruins day one in Hamilton

An 11th test century from opening batsman Tom Latham has put the Blackcaps on top after day one of their second test against England.

After losing the toss, the Blackcaps were sent into bat, paying immediate dividends for England, Stuart Broad claiming opener Jeet Raval (5) in the seventh over.

Captain Kane Williamson (4) was dismissed seven overs lates, edging one to Joe Root off the bowling of Chris Woakes.

But Latham and Ross Taylor steadied things for the hosts, both surviving close LBW calls to put on a 116 run partnership before Taylor gave Root his third catch of the day off the bowling of Woakes.

The day belonged to Latham, who brought up his 11th Test century with a glorious drive on the stroke of tea.

But the rain came just after tea and it didn't go away, ending the days play two hours early.

Woakes was the pick of the English bowlers, claiming 2/41 off his 14 overs.

Play is set to begin half an hour early on day two, starting at 10:30 am NZT.
