Boxing: Sonny Bill Williams set to fight Paul Gallen thanks to Toronto Wolfpack contract clause

Sonny Bill Williams is set for a return to the boxing ring next year for a fight against former Cronulla Sharks captain Paul Gallen.

Reports from Australia say Williams has a clause in his recently signed $10 million contract with the Toronto Wolfpack, allowing him to put on the gloves in a showdown against Gallen likely for October next year.

But for that fight to go ahead, Gallen must beat former AFL star Barry Hall in Melbourne next Friday.

"I've got to deal with Barry Hall first and get him out of the way," Gallen said.

"It's been a tough slog - I've carried the whole promo. He's done nothing.

"I'm angry now. I just want to knock him out. We'll worry about Sonny later."

Gallen has been determined to fight Williams, first calling him out in 2015.   The pair reportedly agreed to terms to fight in 2017, but things never eventuated.

Both fighters are expected to make $2m should it go ahead.

"He'll make his couple of million, so there will be no excuses for him to back away again," Gallen added.

Williams announced his return to rugby league on Friday after signing a two-year deal with the Wolfpack, who play in England's Super League competition.

The 34-year-old last played league in 2014, and hasn't fought in the ring professionally since 2015.

Last year he had an exhibition bout against Australian reality TV personality Stu Laundy in Sydney to raise money for homeless charities.

Both Williams (7-0) and Gallen (9-0) have unbeaten boxing records.
