Football: New Zealand edge Canada to keep U17 World Cup hopes alive

Matthew Garbett's 27th-minute goal against Canada has kept New Zealand's slim playoff hopes alive at the U17 Football World Cup.

The striker converted from an Oskar Van Hattum free-kick just outside the penalty area, curling the ball past Canadian goalkeeper Elelas Himaras for a 1-0 victory that may yet see the young Kiwis out of pool play and into the Round of 16.

After earlier losses to Angola and Brazil, New Zealand needed a result to seal third place in Group A and remain in contention as one of the four best third-placed teams across six pools.

Australia have already sealed one of those spots - Korea, USA, Tajikistan and Mexico are currently the other third-placed teams.

New Zealand likely won't know until Monday, whether they will progress, depending on other results over the weekend.

Garbett also scored his team's only other goal in the tournament so far, during the 2-1 opening loss to Angola.

"To be fair, football's not always about keeping the ball," said Garbett afterwards. "Sometimes you've got to fight.

"Today, we had to fight and show some grit, we had to put our hearts into it and we got the win, so we're happy.

"We've put our name into the hat and we'll see what happens with other games."
