[Please refresh for the latest update]

England 353 & 55/3 (Root 0, Denly 7)
New Zealand 615/9 declared
England trail by 207 runs with seven wickets in hand

STUMPS

28th over - Last over of the day, Santner to Denly, who has Leach scrambling to complete single.

Santner's second ball rears up and hits Denly in the visor - but no concussion test.

OUT! With half the Blackcaps team gathered around the bat, Leach appears to inside-edge onto the pads and Latham dives forward to take the catch.

The batsman doesn't review and he should have - replays show he did not connect with the ball.

The day ends two balls short, with Santner to complete his over in the morning.

Great day's play for New Zealand, who can surely sniff another home test victory at their newest test venue.

27th over - Denly lunges and misses at Wagners first delivery. Next ball balloons off Denly's hip, but clear of any fielder.

26th over - OUT! Santner spins it off the deck again, Burns tries to sweep, but top edges to de Grandhomme, who has some of the biggest hands in the game.

Rory Burns c de Grandhomme b Santner 31 (76b, 4x4) FOW 53

Tailender Jack Leach comes to the middle as night watchman. Wicket maiden for Santner.

25th over - Wagner persists with his short attack - it's a maiden. Three more over left today.

24th over - Santner smells blood in the water and has bowled well all day. He'll be looking forward to the final day on Monday.

Burns offers a catching chance to Southee, who loses the ball as he dives forward. A tough chance.

Next ball, Burns edges the ball between his legs and just misses leg stump.

23rd over - Joe Denly is now at the crease with Burns, facing Wagner. Denly picks a bouncer from Wagner and hooks him to the fence.

22nd over - OUT! Santner spins away from Sibley, who edges to Watling, who takes a regulation keeper catch.

Great breakthrough. Apparently, that's the first spinner's wicket in 102 dismissals in New Zealand. That last was Todd Astle against England last year.

Dom Sibley c Watling b Santner 12 (62b, 1x4) FOW 48

21st over - Eight more overs today. Burns hammers Wagner legside for four.

Wagner digs in a short ball, Burns tries to hook, but gets a bottom edge into the wicket.

20th over - Sibley drives off Santer, straight into Nicholls, who's standing about two metres away. That's gotta hurt!

A maiden from the spinner.

19th over - Wagner digs in deep and Burns hooks him, but the boundary is prevented. Next ball, Burns finds the rope with a similar shot - it's on!

18th over - Santner goes straight through Sibley, taking an inside edge onto the pads and ricocheting into Watling's box. He can't hold it, but that was a guilt-edged chance.

To be fair, Watling has spent two days batting and it makes you wonde whether Latham might have taken that, if he was still there.

17th over - Wagner has the ball, so something is about to happen. His first over is too wide down leg side to threaten the batsman.

16th over - Santner resumes after drinks. Burns tries to sweep the fourth delivery and gets a big bounce to the fielder - just for a split second, it looked like a catch.

At drinks, Watling rejoins the action, after his break. He takes the helmet and returns behind the stumps.

15th over - De Grandhomme bowls wide down Burns' legside and the batsman catches up with it, helping it to the boundary.

14th over - Santner beats Burns' bat with his fourth delivery.

13th over - Burns clips de Grandhomme away for three off his last ball, with Blundell sprinting hard to prevent the boundary.

12th over - Santner's spin comes into the attack. His fourth delivery draws Sibley to drive and he misses, the ball spinning to Taylor at first slip.

Next ball is almost identical. A maiden start for Santner.

11th over - De Grandhomme's second ball swings low and wide, and beats Latham's gloves for four byes.

Burns nicks one that falls just short of Latham, so not really a chance.

10th over - Boult is bowling around the wicket, changing up the angle on Sibley. He returns over the wicket and beats Sibley's outside edge with a snorter.

He's back around the wicket to end the over - another maiden.

Ninth over - De Grandhoome replaces Southee. Remember, he made the breakthrough in the England first innings.

His second ball jumps on Burns, who just barely keeps it down.

Eighth over - Just two singles off Boult's next over.

Seventh over - Southee is really swinging the ball away from Sibley, tempting him to play. Last ball is an attempted yorker that's nudged away for a couple of runs.

Sixth over - Boult bowls wide of the stumps and beats the outside of Sibley's bat. Next ball, he digs it in short and Sibley manges to fend it off without offering a catch chance.

Boult's last ball just strays towards leg side and Sibley nudges him fine for a single - the first run off Boult in this spell.

Fifth over - You get the feeling England are just batting to get to stumps without loss.

Burns doesn't look convincing, but edges a ball from Southee beyond slips to the boundary.

Fourth over - Another maiden from Boult.

Third over - Just two runs off Southee's next over.

Second over - Boult opens from the other end - that's a maiden and Burns edges the final ball, just short of the slips.

First over - Southee will take first use of the new ball. His opening ball to Burns seems to straighten up and just beats the outside of the bat.

There's a hold-up, while groundsmen adjust the stumps, which somehow seem to have developed a lean.

Burns clips Southee towards the boundary, but Wagner chases and dives to pull it up just short, saving one run.

Sibley clips the last ball to the rope - seven runs off the first over.

*****

And that is - finally - the end of the NZ innings, as Williamson waves his tail-enders back to the pavilion. At least the bowlers have had a wee warm-up at the crease, after waiting around for so long.

England will have to face a maximum of 27 overs before the end of play tonight.

Almost lost in the late flurry was the fact that England had bowled 54 wides, which is the most ever against New Zealand in a test innings.

As the Blackcaps take the field, Tom Latham is wearing the keeping gloves, as he does for one-day matches, so he'll give Watling a wee spell, after his marathon innings with the bat. Tom Blundell will act as reserve fielder.

The other news is Tom Sibley will open the batting for England, after sustaining a finger injury in the field on Saturday. He had his split finger glued back together.

201st over - Leach continues. Wagner swings him over the boundary for six - there's still some fizz left in the NZ tail.

Then Wagner reverse-sweeps for a boundary, just to add insult to injury.

200th over - Archer trundles down a 116kph loosener and when he repeats it, Watling staight-drives it to the boundary. NZ 600 up.

OUT! Watling takes a big swish at an innocuous ball from Archer and gets the faintest of nicks through to the wicketkeeper. Great innings from Watling and still time for Boult to play a cameo with the bat before England get a chance to respond.

BJ Watling c Buttler b Archer 205 (473) 24x4, 1x6 FOW 603

199th over - Bang! Southee dispatches the first ball over the boundary for six.

NZ Cricket have declared free admission to the Bay Oval on Monday, as the home side presumably chase victory over England.

OUT! Southee seems to scuff the bat on the turf, as he returns a simple caught-and-bowled chance to Leach, who snaffles it up gratefully.

One thing about Southee with the bat - he's here for a good time, not a long time. Wagner comes to the middle, as NZ persevere.

*****

Bad news for England, as Watling and Southee head back out to the middle after tea, keen to add a few more runs to the lead, before New Zealand declare.

Jack Leach will bowl the 199th over of the Blackcaps innings.

TEA: Stand up BJ Watling - first time he has passed 200 in first class cricket and what a time to do it.

Mitchell Santner was magnificent as well - he worked himself into that innings and by the end he was seeing the ball like a pumpkin. Be back soon.

198th over - Maiden to finish the session.

197th over - He's got it!!! He pushes a single around the corner and that's a double ton! From 460 balls with 23 4's and a 6.

196th over - Southee pushes down the ground for one to get Watling back on strike. Watling has one on te offside.

195th over - Watling rocks back and cuts Root for four to deep point. Two runs away now.

Mitchell Santner c Pope b Curran 126 (269) 11x4's 5x6's FOW 577
194th over - WICKET:
Santner attempts to launch Curran over long-on but the ball hits high on the bat and Pope takes a simple catch just in front of the rope. Partnership ends at 261.

193rd over - Watling has two to cover - he's closing in a double ton. Another two for Watling square on the offside.

192nd over - Short from Curran and Watling pulls him for four ... partnership is 250.

191st over - Five runs from the Joe Root over.

190th over - Watling cuts to deep point and has his highest first class score of 177. NZ lead now 200 runs. Santner charges Curran and swipes him to deep mid-wicket for four - just evades a diving Stuart Broad.

189th over - Partnership is 226 now - that's the highest 7th wicket partnership in NZ history. Joe Root is back - 1-39 from 13. Watling drives Root through the covers for four. 550 up for the Blackcaps.

188th over - Sam Curran replaces Leach - 2/88 from 29 overs. Full from Curran and Santner down the ground for four all along the deck. Shot that.  Short from Curran and Santner pulls over mid-wicket for six! 13 from the over.

187th over - Santner down to fine leg and he'll get back for two on a misfield and has a hundred!! Well played young man. Santner has four this time with a pull around the corner.

186th over - Leach will resume - 1/125 from 44. Watling pushes down the ground for one and that's a 200 run partnership between this pair. Santner goes over Leach straight and has another six! Eight from the over and Santner is two runs from a first test ton.

Drinks

185th over - Stokes short and wide down the legside and that is over Watling and Buttler and down to the boundary for five wides.

184st over - Santner down the wicket again and this time he smokes it over long-on for six. NZ 500 up and Santner closing in on a first test ton.

183rd over - Three runs from the Ben Stokes over.

182nd over - Santner down the wicket and launches Leach over long-off for six!

181st over - Short from Stokes and Watling cuts for four through a vacant point.

180th over - Three runs from the Leach over.

179th over - Ben Stokes replaces Archer - 2/50 from 21. Single for Santner and he has his highest test score.

178th over - Jack leach is back - 1/104 from 41. Santner takes a few steps down the wicket and drives Leach through the covers for four and equals his highest test score.

177th over - Maiden from Archer to Watling.

176th over - Short from Broad and Santner pulls in front of square for four - partnership is 152 now.  Over-pitched from Broad and Santner thrashes him through the covers for four - great shot that. Three in four balls - over-pitched again and Santner off his legs through mid-wicket for four all along the deck.

175th over - Watling just gets down on a fairly quick yorker from Archer ... 143kmph. Watling ramps over slips and third-man for six!It was short and wide and he just helped it on its way.

174th over - Just a BJ Watling single from the Broad over.

173rd over - Jofra Archer will bowl - 0/92 from 38 overs. Watling turns Archer through mid-wicket for three and his 150.

172nd over - Stuart Broad will bowl - 0/50 from 30 overs. A Mitch Santner single from the over and NZ have a 100 run lead.

Here we go - moving session maybe? NZ will need to build that lead past 150 and then hopefully have a bowl at England after Tea.

Afternoon session

LUNCH: After a dull start to the day, there was some more excitement as the Blackcaps head for lunch with a 99-run lead. BJ Watling is on 148. They scored 58 runs in that 123 minute session.

171st over - BJ Watling cops one on the helmet from a Jofra Archer bouncer. There is a brief stop, but he appears to be fine and bats the final two balls of the over.

170th over - Two runs to BJ Watling sees him post a new high score, beating his previous best of 142*. He ends the over on 144*, with the Blackcaps on 448/6.

169th over - Jofra Archer back into the attack as England search for a wicket before lunch. No wickets taken, but it was another maiden over - Archer's 14th of the match.

168th over - Unlucky fielding for England as Sam Curran's ball comes off Mitchell Santner's back leg and rolls to the ropes for four. The Blackcaps now lead by 92 and they're on 445/6. They might get three-four more overs in before lunch.

167th over - Ben Stokes looked set for another maiden over, but BJ Watling smacks him through extra cover for four and that 150 is getting very close.

166th over - Now all eyes are on BJ Watling getting his 150. He scores three runs which leaves him on 137*.

165th over - Ben Stokes comes back into the attack for England. Three more runs in the over. The Blackcaps are now 433/6.

164th over - England have taken third new ball, with Sam Curran to take it, from over the wicket. Santner adds two more singles to his score.

163rd over - Mitchell Santner brings up his third test 50 with a single. It's taken 170 balls but he's made it. The Blackcaps lead by 75 at the end of the over, and England can take another new ball if they want it.

162nd over - Another maiden over. That's seven for Jack Leach in 40 overs.

161st over - Santner hits another four, he's now at 48, and on the last ball of the ver, there is an appeal for an LBW. The umpire didn't raise his finger, but England can't appeal as they're out of reviews.

160th over - A single from BJ Watling brings up the 100 run partnership off 294 balls. Santner backs it up with a four. He's getting even closer to his 50. New Zealand are 420/6.

159th over - Joe Root now comes in for a bowl. He got the key wicket of Henry Nicholls yesterday.

158th over - Play is back underway with Jack Leach coming into the attack. Just two singles which sees Watling move to 130 and Santner to 40.

157th over - Another maiden in what has been a dull first hour at Bay Oval. Time for a drinks break.

156th over - Sam Curran starts the over with a bouncer which is called for a wide. Santner then gets one more run a few balls later.

155th over - The Blackcaps are sneaking in the singles now, as both Watling and Santner score singles in the over. Santner is getting closer to a half-century. Blackcaps are 411/6.

154th over - Another bowling change sees Sam Curran come into the attack. Two singles from the over, but the Blackcaps will be hoping for more. New Zealand have only scored 15 runs in 50 minutes.

153rd over - Ben Stokes comes into the attack for England. BJ Watling edges closer to his highest test score as he wacks the ball through the covers to the boundary rope. His highest test score is 142*.

152nd over - Another maiden over for Archer.

151st over - One leg bye from the over. The Blackcaps lead stands at 50, but I feel like they need to push on here.

150th over - Six deliveries from Jofra Archer for no runs. His 12th maiden of the match.

149th over - It looked set for another another maiden over, but on the final ball of the over, Mithcell Santner edges the ball for four and the Blackcaps pass the 400 mark. Earlier, Santner did edge the ball towards Ben Stokes, but it landed well in front of the Englishman in the slips.  They're now 402/6.

148th over - Guess what? Another maiden over... That's six-straight now.

147th over - Another maiden over. Only the four runs scored so far. Stuart Broad bowled one beautiful ball to Santner in the over, which beat the bat and nearly clipped the wickets.

146th over - Four straight maidens now. There was a chance for a run as Watling sets off before being sent back. A bad throw means they probably could have got the one run.

145th over - Three straight maiden overs now. Not many scoring opportunities to start day four for New Zealand.

144th over - Another maiden over to England. Jofra Archer delivering the goods.

143rd over - Stuart Broad from the other end, round the wicket to Mitchell Santner, and the Engish bowler continues his good form with the ball, completing his 11th maiden over of the match.

142nd over - Jofa Archer gets us underway on day four. His first delivery to BJ Watling is a dot, which is followed up with a four, edged through gully for four.

Kia ora, good morning and welcome to Newshub's live coverage of the first cricket test between the Blackcaps and England at Bay Oval in Mt Maunganui.

New Zealand will look to build on 41-run their lead, early on day four with BJ Watling (119) and Mitchell Santner (31) at the crease.

Play will start at 11am.

On day three, the Blackcaps batted all day, scoring 250 runs while only losing two wickets.

Of course, this particular match-up has taken on greater significance this year - no so much in the test format - after the pulsating climax at the Cricket World Cup, where England pipped New Zealand on a countback of boundaries in the final.

Then, two weeks ago, the T20 series decided at Eden Park also went into extra time, with the tourists again prevailing in a 'super over'.

In the longer format, New Zealand sit poised for their 100th test victory some time this summer, currently sitting on 98, after their victory over Sri Lanka in Colombo three months ago.

The Blackcaps last beat England (by an innings and 49 runs) at Eden Park in March 2018, after dismissing their rivals for 58 runs in the first innings. Skipper Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls both scoring centuries, and Trent Boult (6/32 & 3/67) turned in a man-of-the-match performance with the ball.

Squads

England: Rory Burns, Dom Sibley, Joe Denly, Joe Root (c), Ben Stokes, Ollie Pope, Jos Buttler (wk), Sam Curran, Jofra Archer, Jack Leach, Stuart Broad.

New Zealand: Tom Latham, Jeet Raval, Kane Williamson (c), Ross Taylor, Henry Nicholls, BJ Watling (wk), Colin de Grandhomme, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee, Neil Wagner, Trent Boult.
