Melbourne Cup field

1. Cross Counter - Dominant last year, a genuine winning chance.

2. Mer De Glace - Showed his class with Caulfield Cup victory, right in the reckoning.

3. Master of Reality - One of the best jockeys in the world, but could struggle down the straight.

4. Mirage Dancer - Outside chance, lacks the turn of speed you need on this track.

5. Southern France - A real stayer, but lacks pedigree.

6. Hunting Horn - Not in the elite, middle-distance specialist.

7. Latrobe - Seasoned traveller, but not a two-miler and not a chance.

8. Mustajeer - Proven at long distance, outside chance to place.

9. Rostropovich - In terrible form, no chance.

10. Twilight Payment - Will promise plenty early, but inevitably fade.

11. Finche - Kiwi-trained gelding is right in the running to win.

12. Prince of Arran - In terrific form and ever reliable.

13. Raymond Tusk - Is carrying a small weight, has form that suggests he can compete.

14. Downdraft - Coming in red-hot, excellent chance.

15. Magic Wand - Isn't a winner, never has been and won't be at Flemington.

16. Neufbosc - Here to make up the numbers, zero chance.

17. Sound - Training under Kiwi Micahel Moroney should see improvement, but not enough to be anywhere the front.

18. Surprise Baby - Rising star, great over long distance and superb chance of a win.

19. Constantinople - Unproven at distance, but an enormous talent and well worth a flier.

20. Il Paradiso - Huge promise, but is unproven at this level and could struggle with pressure.

21. Steel Prince - Disappointing recent results, but capable of a top-10 placing.

22. The Chosen One - Kiwi-bred horse on the rise, but this won't be his breakout party.

23. Vow and Declare - Enormous promise, suited to distance and right in the mix.

24. Youngstar - Kiwi-trained mare surprised last year, but lacks the class to win at Flemington.
