Kiwi mixed martial artist Michelle Montague has won gold at the amateur MMA World Championships in Bahrain, one of three New Zealanders to win medals.

Montague beat compatriot Mel Webster in the female lightweight final, needing just 99 seconds to bag the gold after locking on an armbar.

"This moment. This vision. This process. I am speechless," Montague posted on her social media pages.

Montague has only been competing in the sport for four years. She previously played rugby for Waikato in the Farah Palmer Cup.

Kiwi flyweight Hannah Dawson claimed New Zealand's other medal, winning silver after losing to Sweden's Bianca Antman in the decider.

Antman forced the Dawson to tap, one minute and 58 seconds into round two.

"It took a lot to finish her but I knew my grip was tightening," said Antman. My team is great, but most of all I want to thank my daughter, she is the reason I do this."
