Kiwi rally ace Hayden Paddon's World Rally Championship dream appears over after the cancellation of Rally Australia.

Axed by Hyundai in 2018 after a five-year stint, the 32-year-old was handed a career-lifeline by Ford in August for Rally Finland.

But that return was a complete disaster when Paddon crashed out in practice, leaving his WRC ambitions in peril.

The New Zealander had intended to use Australia as a chance to reset his career and attract himself to other teams looking to fill seats in 2020.

But the New South Wales wildfires caused organisers to cancel the event for safety reasons, halting Paddon's ambitions.

Speaking to Newshub, Paddon isn't expecting any offers to come his way.

"There is a high chance this is the end of the line," Paddon said.

"We needed to get a couple of results on the board this year and use that to help some of our discussions for next year.

"Ultimately though we have nothing on the board which means we have nothing to discuss with the teams."

Paddon has one WRC win from 81 events which includes eight podium finishes.
