Motorsport: Huge crash abandons Toyota 86 race at Sandown

The last Toyota 86 race of the Sandown 500 weekend has been abandoned after a massive crash during the first lap.

John Lafolla's vehicle went airborne after he shot off track, causing his car to plough through a barrier before rolling several times.

The car landed hard on the back of a safety ute, shocking the officials inside, before eventually coming to rest upside-down and smoking heavily.

After a few minutes, Lafolla was able to get out of the car and walk to a nearby ambulance as he was helped by medical staff.

The race was immediately red-flagged and the rest of the field made their way back to the pits.

The Toyota 86 Racing Series concludes at the Newcastle 500 on November 22-23.

Extensive repairs are being made to the barriers at the crash scene with track action expected to be severely delayed.
