NFL: Cleveland Browns defender attacks Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph

The NFL world has been left stunned by an ugly on-field brawl that erupted between the Cleveland Browns and the Pittsburgh Steelers towards the end of their game on Friday.

In the dying seconds of the Browns' 21-7 victory, defensive end Myles Garrett snapped and attacked Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph sending the NFL world into a spin.

Players from the Steelers tried to stop Garrett, but it didn't work, the 23-year-old ripped the helmet off the head of Rudolph before hitting him on the top of the head with it.

"That is one of the worst things I've ever seen on a professional sports field," ESPN commentator Joe Buck said.

Fans, reporters and players took to Twitter to vent about the situation.

Current MVP Patrick Mahomes tweeted,  "Bro I cant even believe that just happen."

"He's done for the rest of the year," former wide receiver Dez Bryant tweeted.

ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter only needed one word to sum up the situation, tweeting, "Assault."

Cleveland coach Freddie Kitchens said post-game of Garrett: "He understands what he did is totally unacceptable."

Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield was asked about it immediately after the game, and didn't defend Garrett.

"That's inexcusable, I don't care rivalry or not, we can't do that. That's just endangering the other team. That's inexcusable. He knows that," Mayfield said.

"The reality of it, he's going to get suspended, and that's going to hurt our team. We don't know how long, but that hurts our team."
