Baseball: Jared Koening guides Auckland Tuatara past Canberra Cavalry

Pitcher Jared Koenig has led the Tuatara to a convincing and much-needed 4-0 win over the Canberra Cavalry at North Harbour Stadium.

The American left-hander pitched a seven-inning shutout, conceding just three hits in another star turn for his new club, as they snapped a six-game losing streak.

The victory tied the four-game series at one apiece, after their dramatic loss in the opener on Thursday night.

South Korean Won Seok-Kim also stood up with his first home-run for the struggling Tuatara, who are desperate for a series win to give their 2019/20 campaign some momentum.

Koenig set the tone early on the mound, before Kim sent the ball sailing over the left-field fence, known as the 'Teal Monster', for the first run of the game in the third inning.

An inning later, Josh Morgan came home after a pair of walks and an Andrew Marck single. Marck's sacrifice fly in the fifth saw the final run in.

Relieving pitcher Lucas Jacobson later stepped in to close out the win for the locals.

Jimmy Boyce will be the starting pitcher for Game Three, which starts Saturday at 7pm.
