Cricket: Australia send pink-ball test warning to Blackcaps with crushing win over Pakistan

Nathan Lyon has spun Australia to a series whitewash over Pakistan, taking five wickets to finish off the innings-and-48-run victory in Adelaide.

After David Warner hit a triple-century and Mitchell Starc took six wickets in the first innings, Lyon roared to life on Monday to complete the job in the second Test.

Quiet in the first test-and-a-half of the two-match series, the offspinner took 5-69  to have the tourists all out for 239.

It was the 16th five-wicket haul on his career, and took his tally of scalps at the  Adelaide Oval to 50 - the second most all-time and six behind Shane Warne.

The win marked just the second time in Australia's history they had won all the matches in a series by more than an innings - with the other being against Bangladesh in 2003.

Pakistan were resilient, fighting out almost five hours on day four but in the end it was futile after Australia (590/3 dec) batted them out of the match on the first two days.

"We kept at them, we knew it was going to be hard toil during the day time," captain Tim Paine said.

"The way our bowlers backed up and kept on coming ... it was just a really professional, clinical performance barring some fielding slips yesterday.

"We have got a very skilful attack, an attack with good pace, we have got a great spinner ... at some stage you're going to break teams open.

"When we take wickets we tend to to take wickets quickly because of the quality of bowlers we have got."

Lyon made the initial key breakthrough on day four, dismissing Shaan Masood for 68 and ending a 103-run fourth-wicket stand with Asad Shafiq.

The pair attacked Lyon down the ground, but Shaan fell when he didn't get to the pitch of one from the tweaker, picking out Mitchell Starc at mid-off.

Asad followed shortly after on 57, when Lyon was able to get one to rip at him from a good length and he tickled it to leg slip.

He had his third after the break when Iftikhar Ahmed edged one to Marnus Labuschagne at bat-pad with one that spun back into his body on 27.

First-innings century-maker Yasir Shah was then Lyon's next victim, with one that trapped him lbw on 13.

He then wrapped up his five-wicket haul when Shaheen Afridi skied one to Josh Hazlewood.

Hazlewood also ended with figures of 3-63, before a Pat Cummins direct-hit run-out ended the demolition job shortly after dinner.

Australia now remains unbeaten in all six of their pink-ball tests, and will have another one starting next Thursday against New Zealand in Perth.
