Cycling: 'Black Spokes' put Kiwi cycling talent on display

The next generation of New Zealand cyclists can now ride across the world with the Silver Fern on their back.

The goal of the 'Black Spoke' development squad, launched on Tuesday, is to propel the best local riders to a level where they can compete among the world's elite.

The team brings together nine of the country's top riders with the aim of pushing them to be the world's best.

Ranging in age from 17-29 years, the team will race across the world from Asia to America, as a Kiwi unit taking on the world.

"Hopefully, in that next three-year period, we can launch at least one rider into pro continental level," said Kiwi pro rider Aaron Gate.

Riders will now have a better chance of following the same trail as the likes of George Bennett, who competed admirably at this year's Tour de France.

Team co-founder Sam Guyton's not only excited to develop cyclists, but young men too.

"It's the age they need to keep going and university kicks in as well," Guyton said. "We have a few guys that are going to carry on and do a few papers."

The wheels are in motion for a bright future for New Zealand cycling.
