Liverpool tightened their grip on the English Premier League with a thumping 4-0 win at second-place Leicester City.

The Reds took the lead in the 31st minute, when Roberto Firmino headed home a Trent Alexander-Arnold delivery, before a burst of three goals in seven second-half minutes lifted Liverpool 13 points clear at the top of the table.

Liverpool were awarded a 71st-minute penalty after the ball struck Caglar Soyuncu's arm in the six-yard box.

Substitute James Milner, introduced to the action moments earlier, stepped up to stroke home the spot-kick, giving the visitors a 2-0 lead.

Firmino doubled his personal tally to make it 3-0 four minutes later, a sweet passing movement culminating in Alexander-Arnold squaring the ball for the Brazilian to find the net.

Alexander-Arnold put the result beyond doubt when he sent a low drive across Schmeichel on 78 minutes.

Earlier Carlo Ancelotti made a winning start to his reign as Everton manager when the Toffees beat Burnley 1-0.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored the only goal 10 minutes from time to move Everton up to 13th, four points above the relegation zone.

New Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta had to settle for a draw in his first match as his side were held 1-1 at Bournemouth.

Fourth-placed Chelsea lost 2-0 at home to Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur moved back into the top five with a 2-1 comeback win over Brighton and Manchester United crushed Newcastle 4-1.

"Today was a perfect day," Ancelotti said.

"I'm happy because we need points to move up the table. It was a difficult game because Burnley played a strong game but we deserved the result."

Arsenal needed an equaliser from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to earn a 1-1 draw with Bournemouth, after Dan Gosling had given Bournemouth an early lead.

"I am not happy we have not won the game but happy overall," Arteta said. "In terms of attitude, desire and commitment it was better than I expected."

Chelsea's inconsistent run continued as they were beaten 2-0 at home by Southampton, with goals from Michael Obafemi and Nathan Redmond putting the visitors one point behind Everton.

Frank Lampard's side have now lost three of their past four home matches.

Tottenham had Harry Kane and Dele Alli to thank as they scored in the second half after Adam Webster had given Brighton a first-half lead.

The result lifted Spurs up to fifth, while Brighton are just two points above the bottom three.

Anthony Martial scored twice as Manchester United moved up to seventh with a convincing 4-1 win over Newcastle.

United defender Harry Maguire said it was the perfect response to their defeat by Watford last time out.

"Against Watford we were not good enough for our standard but the boys showed a great intensity today and we thoroughly deserved the three points," Maguire said.

Watford moved off the bottom with a 1-1 draw at Sheffield United, while Norwich dropped to the foot of the table after a 1-0 loss at Aston Villa.

Crystal Palace beat West Ham 2-1 in the day's other match to go ninth, with Jordan Ayew scoring a stunning winner late on.
