First over - Tom Latham, New Zealand's best run scorer in the first innings, will face the first ball, which will be bowled by Mitchell Starc. Latham gets away for a single.

Then there is a big appeal for lbw. Paine considers the review but decides against it, and it proves to be costly as replays show it would have been hitting middle wicket.

Blundell responds with a four from the next ball, and adds three more to end the over.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1:10pm - So there we have it, the Blackcaps need 488 for victory at the MCG. Can they take the game to the fifth day? Australia will have just under 80 overs to bowl them out today.

55th over - WICKET - Neil Wagner strikes with a beauty, which hits leg stump. And there's the declaration. Paine has seen enough and calls them in. New Zealand have been set 488 for victory

53rd over - A few more runs in the over, that lead is now at 484.

52nd over - The current partnership between Travis Head and Matthew Wade has passed 50. Two singles scored from the over.

51st over - Another steady over for Wagner with a few singles from it. The lead is upto 479, but whatever happens a record chase is needed.

50th over - There was a small chance for a wicket in the over, as the ball is edged to Henry at third man, but the ball lands a few feet in front of Henry who makes a diving effort. Matthew Wade is upto 25 runs in the innings.

49th over - Wagner coutinues from the other end. That was a better over for New Zealand. A good mix of deliveries.

48th over - Southee continues and the hosts score seven runs in the over, including a last-ball four which is toped edges over gully to third man Lead now at 470.

47th over - Matt Henry is out in the field, of course the Blackcaps are without Trent Boult due to a hand injury. Neil Wagner to bowl this over for the Kiwis.

The Aussies are being agressive here and have already added a few run on the board. I expect them to try get as many as possible before lunch and then maybe they'll declare. At the end of the over, they lead by 463 runs.

46th over - Here we go folks. Day four is underway. Tim Southee opens the bowling with Travis Head on strike. Four runs scored in the over, Head claiming three of them.

12:00pm - News just in before day four gets underway, that Australian paceman Peter Siddle has just announced his retirement from international cricket.

Siddle played 67 tests for Australia, taking 221 wickets and was called into their extended squad for the Boxing Day test.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kia ora, good afternoon and welcome to Newshub's live coverage of the Boxing Day test between the Blackcaps and Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

On day three of the test, the Blackcaps were bowled out for 148, before Australia built on their lead, ending the day with a 456 run advantage.

Victory for Australia will see them lock away the trans-Tasman trophy, having won the first test by 296 runs earlier this month.

This match marks the first time the Blackcaps have played in the Boxing Day test at the MCG since 1987. Just five of New Zealand's squad were born when the team last graced the MCG on Boxing Day.
