Kiwi NBA star Steven Adams was among a group of Oklahoma City Thunder players evacuated from mall, following a shooting on Friday (NZ time).

The team were attending a private screening of the new Star Wars film, when the incident occurred.

Adams was pictured leaving Penn Square Mall, carrying an R2D2 toy.

"Thunder security was made aware immediately," the team said. "The team was never in danger and was safe during the entirety of the event."

Police tweeted that a suspect was seen fleeing from the area of Foot Locker. Officers searched stores for the suspect, while also clearing out shoppers who were still hiding.

Sgt Kris Gellenbeck said the victim was hospitalised in critical condition, after being shot in the upper body.

Video from the scene showed a heavy police presence in the parking lot.
