Horse racing: Kiwi jockey Opie Bosson eyes another Karaka Millions jackpot

The richest purse in New Zealand sport goes on the line this Saturday at the Karaka Million at Ellerslie Racecourse.

With not one, but two million dollar feature races on the card, the stakes are high.

And as recent history suggests the winner, will have as much to do with the horse as the rider on top.

Few jockeys know their way to the winning post like Opie Bosson

The King of the Karaka Million's won the last three editions of a race where the country's leading two-year-olds gallop for a million dollars.

The crowd was singing his name after last year's win ..

"I could hear them up in the grandstand," Bosson told Newshub."It was quite exciting really.

He'll be on Cool Aza Beel,  which secured barrier two in Wednesday morning's draw.

Competition comes from his good mate and fellow jockey James McDonald. He'll be on the favourite Play That Song, which hit all the right notes on New Year's Day.

"She's a pretty professional filly. She's going to be pretty scary come Karaka Million time"

Trainer Nigel Tiley selected barrier four today and feels confident with MacDonald on board.

Saturday also features Bosson on Probabeel - the winner of last year's race - looking to become the first horse to go on and win the three year old Karaka Million Classic.
