Tennis: Aussie ace Ash Barty answers journalist's phone at media conference

High on the list of cardinal rules for journalists is always put your phone on flight mode before using it to record a media conference - and here's why.

During a post-match presser at the Adelaide International tournament, world tennis No.1 Ash Barty intercepted an incoming call on a reporter's phone, lying on the table in front of her.

"Hello, who are you trying to reach?" asked one of Australia's most popular sportswomen politely. "It's Ash Barty, who's this?

"He left his phone on during a press conference."

"She hung up on me!"

The journalist was ABC Grandstand broadcaster Joel Peterson and the caller was Carlton Aussie rules captain Kerryn Harrington, who was mortified when her snub of Barty went viral.

"Sorry @ashbarty, absolutely starstruck," she tweeted. "What I meant to say was - will you please come play for @carltonfc_w?"

The prospect isn't so far-fetched. During a break from tennis five years ago, Barty took up cricket and played in the inaugural Women's 'Big Bash', hitting 39 runs off 27 balls for the Brisbane Heat against Melbourne Stars.
