Tennis: Paige Hourigan drawn to take on Caroline Wozniacki in ASB Classic opening round

Kiwi tennis number one Paige Hourigan has drawn former world number one Caroline Wozniacki in the opening round of the 2020 ASB Classic.

The 22-year-old was given a wildcard spot into the main draw earlier this week and will take on the former Australian Open champion.

"It's a great opportunity for Paige," tournament director Karl Budge said.

"She's kind of going up against someone where you aren't supposed to win, everyone is always dangerous when it's like that.

"For her, it's quite a kind draw, either way, you're going to go away from that learning a hell of a lot."

The number one seed and 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams will take on former French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova in the opening match of the tournament.

"What an awesome way to start the tournament," Budge told Newshub.

"You're going to have 35 Grand Slams on one court.

"We are going to have a multiple Grand Slam champion in the second round no matter what."

The other Kiwi in the main card, Valentina Ivanov has drawn Swiss player Jill Teichmann.

Two-time defending champion Julia Goerges will take on a qualifier in her opening round while second seed and world No. 15 Petra Martic will go up against Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck.

Qualifying is currently underway with main draw singles action to kick off on Monday January 6.
