Cricket: New Zealand finish fourth at U19 World Cup after bronze final abandoned

New Zealand has finished fourth at the U19 Cricket World Cup after their third-place playoff match against Pakistan was abandoned without a ball being bowled in South Africa.

Persistent rain at Willowmoore Park, Benoni prevented any chance of play on the penultimate day of the tournament, with the umpires having no option but to call the match off after discussion with the respective team coaches.

As a result, Pakistan finished third with a superior ranking on the points table from the group stage.

New Zealand finished with three points after one win against Sri Lanka, one loss to India and one abandoned game against Japan in Group A.

Pakistan finished with five points having beaten Zimbabwe and Scotland before rain washed out their final Group C match against Bangladesh.

The sub-continent nation finished third at the last U19 World Cup in New Zealand 2018 when their third-place was abandoned against Afghanistan.

Despite the result, it is New Zealand's best finish at the U19 World Cup since 2012.

Defending champions India face Bangladesh in Sunday's final in Potchefstroom.
