An amateur football player in France has been banned for five years, after biting an opponent's penis with so much power, the victim required stitches.

The shocking incident took place after a drawn match between second-division sides Terville and Soetrich in the east of France on November 18 last year, when a fight broke out in the stadium carpark.

According to local reports, a Terville player tried to break up a fight between two players, but a Soetrich player retaliated by biting his 'cheese sizzler'.

The bitten man needed emergency attention and 10 stitches, taking time off work to recover. He has also been suspended from the league for six months.

Neither player involved in the incident could be named for legal reasons.

Mosellan football district spokesman Emmanuel Saling said such long suspensions were rare.

"The events took place after the match in the stadium car park," he explained. "There was an altercation, an escalation and things got worse.

"It is quite rare to have sanctions of several years - there are less than 10 per year. The case was a bit saucy, but... there must have been some nasty tension, so the smiles on the disciplinary committee quickly faded."
