Football: Chelsea's Champions League hopes in tatters after Bayern Munich romp

Chelsea's Champions League hopes are in tatters, after a humbling 3-0 loss at home to German giants Bayern Munich.

Former Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry scored twice on his return to London, while Polish striker Robert Lewandowski also scored in the round-of-16 first-leg romp.

Chelsea will miss defender Marcos Alonso for the return leg, after the Spaniard was set off in for striking the face of Lewandowski in the second half.

Stamford Bridge was rumbling before kick-off and hopes of a positive result soared, after an encouraging start by the 'Blues'.

But the London club couldn't make the most of their chances and Bayern made them pay, scoring twice in five minutes early in the second half.

Chelsea now need a football miracle in Munich next month, when they must win by four clear goals to advance to the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, Napoli held Leo Messi and Barcelona to a 1-1 draw at home. Striker Dries Mertens scored a first-half goal, before Frenchman Antoine Griezmann snared an equaliser for the visitors.
