Rugby: Referee Nigel Owens shoots down social-media hater with hilarious retort

Renowned rugby referee Nigel Owens has hit back back at a Twitter user, who labelled him a "wa***r".

The Welshman presided over the Six Nations clash between England and France in Paris on Monday, with the French winning 24-17.

Despite the close scoreline, England put in a largely lethargic performance, but that didn't stop one passionate supporter blaming Owens for the upset loss.

"What a wa***r Nigel Owens is," declared @tomtallis11.

Owens' retort was quick and quirky, tweeting: "It's a shame your father wasn't one."

The openly gay whistleblower received a flood of support, congratulating him on his witty comeback.

Former French Rugby World Cup captain Thierry Dusautoir was one to show appreciation for Owens' hilarious reply.

"Hi mate, I think you won the internet today, well played."

The 2020 Six Nations could prove to be Owens' last as an international referee, with World Rugby looking to promote younger officials for the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

"I guess I will know more by the end of the next 7-8 weeks, when the tournament is over," Owens told Wales Online.
