The All Blacks Sevens have been denied the opportunity to defend their Sydney title, after being eliminated from finals contention on Sunday.

Their 26-5 defeat to Fiji on Sunday night left them relying on other results to go their way to secure a spot in the semi-finals.

But Fiji's 55-0 demolition of Wales put paid to their hopes of winning a third-straight tournament, after their victories in Cape Town and Hamilton.

They did manage to finish pool play on a high note, beating Kenya 19-5 in courtesy of tries to Salesi Rayasi, Tim Mikkelson and Sam Dickson.

They'll take on hosts Australia in a playoff for fifth place at 9pm (NZT).
