Super Rugby 2020: Chiefs overcome Sunwolves in Tokyo

The Chiefs have maintained their flawless start to the 2020 Super Rugby season with a 43-17 win over the Sunwolves in Tokyo.

Fullback Damian McKenzie was the star for the undermanned visitors, sparking a first half assault that essentially put the contest out of reach for the locals, ensuring they remain the only unbeaten NZ side.

The Sunwolves were game throughout, scoring the first try of the match, but were unable to match the flair and breakdown prowess of the New Zealanders.

The Chiefs finished with seven tries to snare another bonus point, while the Sunwolves crossed fot three of their own, much to the delight of the almost 19,000-strong crowd at Prince ChiChibu Memorial Stadium.

Stand-in captain Brad Weber and McKenzie proved a formidable combination, while Lachlan Boshier - playing in his favoured No. 7 jersey - was a menace at both the breakdown and the loose.

The second half was a much tighter affair, until two tries in the final three minutes to Quinn Tupaea and Kaleb Trusk respectively blew the scoreline out.

The Hamilton-based franchise stay atop the New Zealand conference and will head back home to take on the Brumbies next Saturday.
