Women's T20 World Cup: White Ferns fall short against India

  • 27/02/2020

India have edged the White Ferns in their Womens' T20 World Cup showdown in Melbourne on Thursday.

Chasing 134 for victory, the New Zealanders' left their offensive too late, ultimately coming up just three runs short.

Shafali Verma's opening blitz of 46 off 34 balls, including three sixes, got the Indian innings off to the ideal start.

NZ pulled them back in the final 10 overs and did well to restrict them to 133/8.

The early departure of both Suzie Bates and captain Sophie Devine for just 14 and 6 respectively put the Kiwis on the back foot, and they never recovered.

Some quickfire runs from Amelia Kerr gave the White Ferns a chance, needing 16 off the final over, but they fell agonisingly short.

Kerr played a brilliant hand, finishing with 34 runs, which included six boundaries.

New Zealand will move on to play Bangladesh on Saturday.
