Algarve Cup: Football Ferns gift Norway late winner in third-place playoff

A late goal has seen the Football Ferns drop their Algarve Cup third-place playoff match 2-1 against Norway.

Norwegian striker Caroline Graham Hansen capitalised on a defensive mistake from Rebekah Scott, firing past goalkeeper Erin Naylor for an 86th-minute winning goal.

New Zealand had taken an early lead through a 10th-minute Hannah Wilkinson goal, but the score was level a few minutes later, when Synne Jensen netted for Norway.

Chances were few and far between for the remainder of the first spell, with Wilkinson missing a close-range header on the half-hour mark, the closest either side came to leading at halftime.

The Football Ferns were the better side for most of the second spell, with the front pairing of Alli Riley and Wilkinson peppering the Norweigian goal at times.

But Scott's crucial mistake inside her own area with four minutes to play handed victory to the European side.

New Zealand pressed for an injury-time equaliser, but couldn't break down a stern Norweigian defence.

For the fourth time in eight matches, the Ferns had conceded a result-changing goal inside the last 10 minutes.
