Athletics: Kiwi shot putter Tom Walsh's dogged display of innovative training

  • 28/03/2020

Self-isolation and closed gyms have forced athletes around the globe to find alternative methods of training, and that's no different for NZ shot put ace Tom Walsh.

The former world champion took some inspiration from Blackcaps captain Kane Williamson - who posted a clip of he and his dog conducting slip-catching practice - to adopt some canine-based weight training of his own.

With the seminal 'Sweet Caroline' as his soundtrack, Walsh scoops up his baffled Golden Retriever and proceeds to reel out a set of squats.

"Had to use what I have at home for this exercise. Got the inspiration from [Williamson]" he wrote in his Instagram post.

The 28-year-old is currently on an forced hiatus from competition, with the Diamond League suspended until at least June and the Tokyo Olympics postponed until 2021.
