The coronavirus pandemic sweeping the world has disrupted a raft of sporting events, with most live sports affected.

Internationally, football, Formula One, the NBA and golf have all been hit, among a long list of others.

Closer to home Super Rugby is off and the cricket season came to a sudden halt.

That doesn't leave a lot of sport for armchair fans to watch, forcing Spark Sport to temporarily suspend charging for its sports channel.

On Tuesday, the company announcedthat all existing and new subscribers could watch the sport channel free of charge until May.

Head of Spark Sport Jeff Latch said COVID-19 had affected some of the best live sport from around the globe and offering the service free was "the right thing to do".

"In practice, this means we will stop charging existing customers for their subscription from their next billing cycle. Currently, our view is that we will start charging again in May, but we will review this closer to the time.

"We also recognise a lot of New Zealanders are either in self-isolation or limiting social interaction at the moment, and having access to sports content is a great way for people to be entertained and keep their spirits up," Latch said.
