Tennis: Indian Wells tournament cancelled as coronavirus concerns grow

Tennis is the latest sport affected by growing concerns around the coronavirus outbreak.

On Monday (NZ time), officials of the Indian Wells tournament in Southern California confirmed this year's competition had been cancelled.

The tournament had previously announced that it would take precautions in light of the virus, including ball kids wearing gloves on court, and telling players not to handle pens or other items to autograph.

Many players had already arrived for the two-week tournament, which is regarded as the unofficial fifth Grand Slam on the circuit.

The Indian Wells event joins several other notable sports events that have been postponed, cancelled or had major changes made due to the outbreak, including the Bahrain Grand Prix, Six Nations rugby fixtures and Italian football.
