The shorts New Zealand rugby legend Jonah Lomu wore in the 1996 Super 12 final are going to be listed on Trade Me, with a starting price of $500,000.

Lomu, 40, died in 2015 following a heart attack that was connected with a kidney condition.

The All Blacks great scored one of six tries for the Blues in their 45-21 win over the Natal Sharks in the decider at Eden Park.

During the match, they were ripped by Sharks first-five Henry Honiball.

The man who bought them for $4800 at the time is now auctioning them off on Trade Me, telling Stuff 50 percent of what he makes will be donated to children's charities such as Starship and Ronald McDonald House.

"We need a bit of a dog on a surfboard story to pump up the tyres, because morale is low," the anonymous Brisbane-based Kiwi told Stuff.

"I'm trying to separate the wheat from the chaff here ... I'm going to ask for $500,000. That's the start point, but I'm saying 'open to offers' and, look, whatever comes in will come in."
