Australian sailing legend Iain Murray has been appointed independent regatta director for the 2021 America's Cup next March.

Murray will assume the role vacated by Canadian John Craig, who stepped aside last year, continuing his long association with the sports most prestigious event.

A former America's Cup sailor in his own right, Murray is back in the role he filled at the previous two editions in San Francisco in 2013 and then Bermuda three years ago, where he oversaw Team New Zealand's stunning win over Oracle.

Murray will also hold the post for the challenger selection series and America's Cup world series regatta scheduled for later this year on Auckland's Waitemata Harbour - the site for the America's Cup.

Sixty-two-year-old Murray was part of four Australian America's Cup campaigns and is a three-time winner of the Sydney-to-Hobart yacht race, an event he has sailed 26 times.

Murray will be responsible for settling numerous on-water disputes and rule on race and weather conditions.
