A pair of Michael Jordan's autographed, game-worn Air Jordan 1s from his rookie season have sold for a record-breaking US$560,000 (NZ$944,000).

Auction company Sotheby's predicted the shoes would reach US$150,000 (NZ$252,000), but they almost quadrupled that value.

According to the auction website, the sneakers on offer were custom-made for Michael Jordan in US sizes 13 and 13.5, and were the Chicago Bulls' classic colours of red, black and white.

Shoe collector Jordy Geller sold the pair, capitalising on the hype surrounding the Last Dance documentary's run on Netflix.

"I decided to sell because now is the right time,” Geller has told the Action Network.

Geller currency holds the Guinness World Records title for the largest collection of shoes.

The previous record for a pair of game-used Jordan shoes was a Converse pair worn during the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, fetching US$190,373 (NZ$320,942) in June 2017.

The record for the highest-priced game-used Jordans were the Air Jordan XIIs, worn during Game Five of the 1997 NBA Finals, which sold for US$104,765 (NZ$176,619).

Last year, the 1972 Nike 'Moon Shoe' set the world record for the most expensive sneakers ever sold at auction, selling for $437,000 (NZ$736,961).

Made for runners at the 1972 Olympic Trials, only about 12 pairs of the Moon Shoes were created, with even fewer still remaining today. The sneaker is the only pair known to exist in unworn condition.
