Coronavirus: Greyhound racing leads NZ's return to sporting action

On Tuesday, live sport returned to New Zealand with greyhound racing at Addington Raceway the first out of the gates since a return to alert level 3.

While the product on the track looks the same, alert level 3 means a number of social distancing measures have been put in place, and no crowds.

"Spacing them two metres right from the time they get to the kennels," said trainer Tony Music. "To the vet check, to the weight, to being kennelled, to coming out for the stirrups, to the boxing two dogs at a time.

All greyhound races will be for minimum stakes until the end of July.

However, what to expect beyond this season is still unknown.

Harness racing is set to start May 29 and thoroughbred racing July 2

But, for now, at least punters now have something to lap up.
